Recent observations at a variety of wavelengths have shown that the stellar disks of spiral galaxies extend much farther in radius than previously thought. We are exploring this component to understand the kinematics of the material, in hopes of understanding how galaxies grow with time. Below is a comparison of the outerskirts of M 94 (left image is U-band imaging taken with the LBT and right image is GALEX NUV image). This comparison highlights some of the outerdisk blue knots and also the complexity of their structure that is not quite evident in the GALEX data.
